George Lange Boy Flying on Labor Day
George Lange Boy Flying on Labor Day
Who: Boy Flying on Labor Day
Date: 9/7/09
What: Personal shoot at Maplewood Pool - Labor Day
Where: Maplewood, New Jersey
When we were living in Maplewood, I would go to the pool on Labor Day - the final day before the pool closed for the season. I would lay under the high dive and shoot up toward the sky. Just kids (and sometimes parents) flying through the sky. I did almost all the shots looking up, but at one moment I looked out and saw this incredible kid with a cape flying. I captured this single frame, which has become one of my all time favorites and is the cover of my new book, “Picturing Joy.”
About George Lange has worked for Duane Michals and Annie Leibovitz before establishing his own career. His work has appeared in Vogue, Rolling Stone, Vanity Fair, Esquire, People and The New York Times, among other publications. He shot many of the iconic images from Friends, Frasier, Dawson’s Creek, and Seinfeld, as well as Sophia Loren, ads for and the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.
