My time with my subjects is often incredibly brief, a small window into a life I would never get to share without my camera. Kate Spade was just incredibly fun. Painting her toenails at her desk was not on the agenda - but it became one of my favorite shots ever. How do you get that shot? You just ask them to climb up on something to get a good angle. The rest of the shoot was equally sweet - full of color - and full of life. Oftentimes when I read about such sadness in someone’s life that I shot, I think that I come in through the door of joy. That is how I am wired. Am I blind to the dark side? Maybe in my pictures. But in every life - even lives with incredible sadness - there is also joy. That is why I love this picture even more.
About George Lange has worked for Duane Michals and Annie Leibovitz before establishing his own career. His work has appeared in Vogue, Rolling Stone, Vanity Fair, Esquire, People and The New York Times, among other publications.
